What is the Level 2 Award in Structured Cabling and Enterprise Networks?

This 3-day City & Guilds 3668-02 Unit 203 course will provide you with the knowledge and installation skills that are needed to install, terminate and test copper cabling for datacomms structured cabling data networks. Unit 203 is one of 3 optional units to complete the level 2 full award.

Delegates will learn about current terminologies in copper data cabling, health and safety considerations, basic electrical theory and principles, data cabling performance categories, and recommended installation procedures according to current standards. The course also covers telephony installation, cable tracing, jumpering, and testing, as well as fault finding in copper communication data cabling.

The skills and knowledge gained are applicable to various types of data cabling used in commercial environments, including large office data cabling systems, premises networks, and industrial communications cabling networks. Level 2 Structured Cabling and Enterprise Networks Course Content

1. Conduct a risk assessment in order to work safely with copper cabling in an internal environment

  • Conduct a risk assessment prior to the installation of copper cables in an internal environment.
  • Work safely when installing, terminating, and testing copper cables in an internal environment.

2. Apply basic electrical theory in data communications cabling

  • Use a multi-meter to measure voltage and resistance.
  • Use Ohm’s law and transmission characteristics to identify and solve simple electrical circuit issues.

3. Install copper cabling in accordance with current applicable standards

  • Understand cable components and topologies before installation.
  • Undertake a site survey prior to commencing work.
  • Follow correct cable installation procedures.

4. Use copper communications cabling techniques to terminate cables, terminate modules, keystones, modular plug onto appropriate cabling

  • Terminate cables and hardware to mount into patch panels/wall/floor boxes/cabinets and frames.
  • Terminate modules, keystone, modular plug onto appropriate cabling eg, UTP, FTP, S/FTP cabling.

5. Test and measure FTP and UTP links

  • Use a range of commercially available cable testing equipment.
  • Measure cable parameters using the correct test methods.

Assessment and Certification

To achieve your qualification you will be assessed through:

  • A 30-question multiple-choice exam taken online using City & Guilds’ exam portal

The multiple-choice exam is a closed book exam, which means you are not allowed to use any supporting or reference materials when you complete the exam e.g. a textbook.

There is also a timed practical assessment where delegates will install and test a data cabling link (Cat5e/Cat6/Cat6a – Class D/E/Ea).

Certification

You will be awarded a digital certificate on successful completion of this course. However, you will need to complete the mandatory unit (201) to be awarded the full award.
