What is a CPCS Crawler Crane (A02) Open Course?

Open courses are in-person training sessions conducted at a dedicated training venue. Specifically, the CPCS Crawler Crane open course (A02) is designed to prepare candidates with the skills and knowledge needed to competently and safely operate a crawler crane. The course prepares participants to pass both the CPCS Practical and Theory tests, enabling them to achieve the Red CPCS Trained Operator Card. Before work on-site can begin, you must learn to operate the crane in various scenarios. For example, this includes tasks such as lifting heavy loads and manoeuvring in confined spaces. Moreover, throughout your training, you will maintain compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and manufacturers’ requirements.

A crawler crane is a type of crane mounted on a moveable tracked platform that can rotate 360º in order for it to manoeuvre easily and efficiently within a work area. Crawler crane operators need special training to do it safely. The CPCS A02 Crawler Crane course is perfect for beginners and intermediates. When all training is completed, you’ll be ready to take the CPCS tests and become a certified crawler crane operator.

What happens on a Crawler Crane training course?

Most CPCS courses will run in the following format:

  • Day 1 – mostly theory-based classroom training. This is to ensure that you are confident with the theory aspect before you go out and complete the practical training. Depending on how your theory learning goes, you may get practical training for some of the day on your first day.
  • Day 2-4 – usually putting your theory knowledge into practice by completing the practical exercises of your training.
  • On the final day of your course, you will complete your theory test preparation by completing mock exam questions, and then complete your actual assessment: the CPCS technical tests.
