What is the IOSH Managing Safely Refresher Virtual Course?

The Virtual Managing Safely Refresher course is an online, trainer-lead course on Zoom. Attend from the comfort of your own home or workplace, with activities designed specifically for the virtual platform. Achieve exactly the same certificate you’d earn if you attended the course in a traditional classroom environment.

With the virtual training, you can renew your IOSH Managing Safely certificate you need without the need to travel. There is no difference between the IOSH qualification gained on a classroom-based course and the virtual course. We have been running Virtual online IOSH courses using Zoom Classroom since 2020, and we have put a lot of time and effort into the virtual course’s development to make it a real long-term alternative to classroom courses. Your trainer will deliver the course online in real-time, so your experience of the course is engaging and interesting. If you have any questions, your trainer is there, live, to support your understanding every step of the way.

You will collaborate with other managers and supervisors whilst completing a scenario exercise supporting a company with aspects of safety and health after an accident. This application of skills to a real-world scenario keeps the course relevant and engaging.

IOSH Managing Safely Refresher Course Content

The refresher course covers and recaps lessons from the Managing Safely course, in addition to building upon these lessons with updated information. The final focus for this refresher course is the health and safety management system: plan, do, check and act. The virtual course has been adapted with activities designed specifically for online delivery.

Thinking Back – you will reflect on the lessons you took away from your full IOSH Managing Safely course, and revisit key reasons for managing and supervising safely. Refresh your knowledge on some key terms using engaging and inclusive teaching methods.

Leadership – revisit why leadership and management are important, and how that can impact the health and safety culture and attitudes throughout your organisation.
Refresh your knowledge on the 4 C’s, the essentials to good practice.

Plan – take a look at health and safety policy and what it includes, how should you deliver this within your organisation, and how to use an effective management system to control risk, react to change, respond to emergencies and meet legal requirements.

Do – undertake the risk assessment exercise, think about and discuss the best ways to communicate your findings from the risk assessment along with the health and safety plan to your workforce. What needs to be done to implement the plan.

Check – Recap the check stage, take a look at possible data types, what can be measured, and how can that help in seeing if your plan is implemented, if it’s working well.

Act – you will look at why reviewing performance, acting on lessons and focusing on continual improvement is essential. Reflect on what you have learned and how you can use that in your workplace.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the questions we frequently get asked about our IOSH Managing Safely Refresher virtual courses:

Is lunch included on virtual courses?

Lunch and refreshments are not included for your virtual course or on most classroom courses. You’ll have plenty of breaks to make yourself a tea or grab some snacks though.

What's is the difference if I take the virtual course rather than a classroom course?

The answer is simple no travelling, you will have:-
  • Exactly the same trainers
  • Same course content and learning hours
  • Gain the same qualification
You don't need to be worried about the technology we will support you with guidance, if you have difficulty with joining the course or at any other difficulty during the course.

What are online virtual courses?

Online virtual courses give you the same training as you would receive in a classroom course. The difference is that your trainer is on your screen instead of in front of you in a classroom. The training is live and in real-time with the trainer taking you through the course in the same way as a classroom course. The content and qualification awarded are also the same but the presentation is modified to make the online experience interesting and engaging.

What’s the difference between virtual and elearning?

Elearning courses are made up of course materials that you read, listen to and watch. Our virtual courses are more like classroom courses except you are viewing your tutor and the presentation on your screen. You learn alongside other delegates, take part in group activities and discussions, share stories and situations from your workplace and get advice from your tutor and classmates. Elearning you learn at your own pace, choosing to do it all at once, an hour at a time however you like, virtual courses have set times just like a classroom course.

Do I get a workbook for my course?

For some courses, you will be sent a PDF workbook, which is easy to take with you to work or site (on a mobile device) and has a much smaller carbon footprint for the environment. For CITB courses, you will be sent a link to access workbooks for your course. If you need access to a physical copy of your workbook and you have been sent a PDF copy, contact a member of our team using the online chat by phone (0800 0213 263) or email us to see how we can accommodate you.

Do I have to take the Managing Safely Refresher within X amount of years after completing my Managing Safely course?

The rules for the Managing Safely Refresher have changed, you no longer have to take the refresher within 3 years of your course as there is no expiry date to your Managing Safely. However, IOSH recommend that managers complete the refresher course every 3 years, as this will keep your knowledge fresh and up-to-date.

When does my Managing Safely certificate expire?

The IOSH Managing Safely certificate technically doesn't expire. IOSH recommend you take the refresher course around 3 years after your original course, but your certificate doesn't have an expiry date.
