What is IPAF Training 2 Categories?
IPAF Training is for those who operate or work with mobile elevation working platforms (MEWPs). These include scissor lifts and boom lifts. MEWPs come under different categories, and training is tailored to the category that you are specialising in. The most popular categories are 3a & 3b.
As standard, our courses include 3a & 3b. If you’d like 1a or 1b included or training for individual categories, please get in touch.

We also offer the IPAF PAL+ training, an advanced qualification for experienced operators who work in industries where a MEWP is manoeuvred in challenging environments.

Who should attend IPAF Training 2 Categories?
If your job requires you to use MEWPs, the HSE says you should have attended a recognised operator training course and received a certificate, card or ‘license’, listing the categories of MEWP you are trained in.
Once you complete your IPAF training course you’ll receive your PAL card listing the categories of MEWP you are competent to operate.

IPAF Training 3 Categories Course Content
Content will vary depending on the location of your course and all of our trainers will include their own content. All courses however, will cover the following listed below, plus content and practical work specific to the categories you choose:
IPAF Course Content
- Awareness of different types of MEWPs
- Safe operation of MEWPs and limitations of use
- Pre-use checks, inspection and function tests
- Planning the route before operating the MEWP
- Travelling the route and manoeuvring the MEWP
- Setting up the MEWP for work
- Basic operational practice
- Achievement testing
- Selection and use of fall arrest equipment
- Log book issue
- Course review and close
By the end of the course, you will:
- have the relevant knowledge on Health & Safety, accident prevention and control
- Understand what is needed regarding personal protective equipment
- drive the machine proficiently and safely and be able to manoeuvre the machine as needed
- Correctly position the MEWP and carry out the required tasks
IPAF training is provided third party through an IPAF Approved training centre

Equipment to bring on the day
You will need to bring the following to your IPAF course:
- Hard hat
- Safety goggles/glasses
- High visibility jacket/coat/vest
- Safety gloves
- Safety boots
- 1.5m full body adjustable short restraint harness and lanyard set
Under no circumstances will any delegate be allowed to take part in any outdoor work without the above personal safety equipment.
Attendees to the IPAF training course are required to bring their own harnesses as they are not supplied at the training centres.

Assessment and Certification
You will be assessed through a practical and written examination.
Successful candidates will receive the IPAF qualifications in their chosen categories, and an IPAF Certificate of Training for these. They will both be accessible via the IPAF ePAL app, available on Android and iOS smartphones, which also includes a logbook and safety information.

Entry Requirements
All candidates must be physically able to participate in the course and over the age of 16. The course will be in verbal English as will all slides shown during the theory session. The customer can provide a translator if it is deemed necessary, however, the translator cannot be a candidate on the course. If you would like to bring a translator, please get in touch with our team before your course date.

IPAF PAL+
The PAL+ course for category 3a and 3b is an optional one-day, advanced qualification aimed at trained operators who work in higher-risk or challenging environments.
