Assessment and Certification

The NPORS Appointed Person (N401) course includes a theory and practical assessment. You must pass both to achieve certification. The practical assessment involves demonstrating your ability to safely plan and manage lifting operations. The assessor will observe tasks such as developing lift plans, assessing risks, coordinating with lifting teams, along with adherence to health and safety procedures and correct PPE use.

Upon passing, you can apply for an NPORS card. There are two options:

Red Trained Operator Card

  • Valid for 2 years

  • Requires a valid CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) test

Blue Competent Operator Card

  • Valid for 5 years

  • Requires completion of a relevant NVQ

  • If you are applying for the NPORS CSCS card, you will need to have completed the CITB Operatives Health, Safety and Environment test passed no more than two years before the course start date
  • Good understanding of spoken and written English.
