Suitable for both novices and experienced operators, it’s led by a qualified NPORS instructor in a controlled setting. • Describing the nature of the industry sector and the roles and responsibilities of a Slinger/Signaller.
• Identifying and explaining the purpose, basic construction, uses, applications, characteristics, and terminology of various lifting equipment and accessories.
• Confirming manufacturer’s requirements using technical data, other information sources, and relevant regulations and legislation.
• Interpreting and extracting information from all necessary documentation.
• Undertaking pre-use inspections on non-specialist lifting accessories and identifying unserviceable items.

Assessment and Certification
The NPORS Slinger Signaller (N402) course includes a theory and practical assessment. You must pass both to achieve certification. The practical assessment involves demonstrating your ability to safely guide and control lifting operations. The assessor will observe tasks such as selecting suitable lifting accessories, securing loads, and giving clear signals, along with adherence to health and safety procedures and correct PPE use.
Upon passing, you can apply for an NPORS card. There are two options:
Red Trained Operator Card

Requires a valid CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) test
Blue Competent Operator Card

Valid for 5 years

Requires completion of a relevant NVQ

Entry Requirements
- If you are applying for the NPORS CSCS card, you will need to have completed the CITB Operatives Health, Safety and Environment test passed no more than two years before the course start date
- Good understanding of spoken and written English.
