SA021 – Pole Vehicle Safety - Open Course

You will be assessed, via your practical and theory assessment, on the following criteria:

• Work safely at all times, complying with health and safety and other relevant regulations and guidelines
• Carry out basic checks on the vehicle including as appropriate: visual, function, leaks, security, defect reports, condition and serviceability
• Explain the importance of making accurate records of the results of safety checks and interpreting them correctly
• Explain workplace procedures and policies for vehicle assessment and acceptable vehicle condition
• Carry out basic checks of systems and components required to identify damage, wear, corrosion and security
• Confirm the correct operation of vehicle systems and vehicle condition
• Carry out a range of activities relevant to vehicle servicing, including as appropriate: replenishment, replacement, adjustment, settings, tensions, pressure, wear and levels
• Describe appropriate personal and vehicle protective equipment (PPE)
• Outline the common malfunctions that can be identified from operational checks and tests
• State the importance of reporting defects and discrepancies to tools and equipment held on the vehicle
• Explain the implications of failing to carry out vehicle safety checks correctly
• Complete pre-use checks e.g. coolant, oil, fuel, tyres, lights and indicators
• Complete pre-driving checks, e.g. security (equipment and passengers), vision (mirrors windscreen and windows), driving position
• Complete designated carried equipment checks
• Complete motion checks and brakes
• Complete after-use checks on vehicle and equipment
• Report defects and discrepancies
• Explain the correct use and duration of warning signals and indicators

The course includes both practical and a theory assessment.

• Practical Assessment – where you will demonstrate your knowledge of practical tasks
• Theory test which is composed of multiple-choice questions

Certification

This Smart Awards certificate is valid for 3 years, you will then need to complete the course again or attend a refresher course if available, to renew your qualification.

This qualification is available to anyone over the age of 18 years old.

There are no formal entry requirements and Smart Awards will not restrict access on the grounds of prior academic attainment, age, employment, geographic location or any other grounds. There are no barriers that restrict access or progression, thereby promoting equality. It is expected however, that learners will have a level of literacy adequate to cope with both the theory and practical assessments.
