What is the CITB SMSTS Refresher Open Course?

The SMSTS Refresher Open Course is face-to-face in a classroom. Project Skills Solutions has venues across the UK from where you can attend open courses.

If you have previously completed the SMSTS course, your certificate will expire after 5 years. To renew your qualification, you need to complete a SMSTS refresher course. After completing this course you will have updated your knowledge and skills relating to the key responsibilities and accountabilities for members of the construction site Management team.

Your CITB SMSTS course certificate will be renewed and valid for 5 years.

CITB SMSTS Refresher Course Details

On receiving payment for your SMSTS Refresher course, an email with your ‘course joining instructions’ is sent to you.

This document includes the following details:

  • Your chosen course date (this is a 2-day course)
  • Course start time at your chosen venue
  • Address of your chosen venue, including a map screenshot
  • Details of what to do if you need any special requirements to complete the course

You need to bring photographic ID, such as a driving licence or passport with you.

Lunch is not included, so please provide your own.

Assessment and Certification

At the end of the course, you will be required to complete a test that consists of 18 multiple-choice questions worth one mark each and 7 short answer questions worth 2 marks each. You will be given 35 minutes to complete the assessment, and during the last 15 minutes you will be able to use your GE700).

You will receive a digital certificate usually within 2 weeks of completing your course.

What happens if I fail the CITB SMSTS Refresher Assessment?

In the event that delegates fail a CITB assessment paper and they qualify to do a re-sit assessment, the assessment paper can ONLY be taken on the same day.

Entry Requirements

You must have an in-date SMSTS certificate (with no more than 6 months before expiry). You will need a good understanding of spoken and written English to complete the course successfully.

Can I attend the virtual CITB SMSTS course on a smart phone?

As the CITB SMSTS course is a 5-day course, we do not under any circumstances allow delegates to complete the course on a smart phone. The smaller screen size will make following the tutor difficult over 5 days, as well as difficulties completing the interactive parts of the course and assessments. If you do not have access to a device other than a mobile phone to complete the course, contact one of our team to discuss what your options are.

Is this course CITB approved?

Yes this course and content is approved by the CITB.

What ID can I use for my CITB course?

When you attend a CITB Site Safety Plus course you need provide a form of photographic ID such as:
  • Passport: A valid passport of any nationality of the delegate – must not be more than 6 months out of date
  • Photo Card Driving Licence: A valid UK only driving licence with a photograph of the delegate – must not be more than 6 months out of date
  • Non UK Driving Licence: Showing a photograph of the delegate – must not be more than 6 months out of date
  • Work ID Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate – must not be more than 6 months out of date (if applicable) and refer to the delegates present employer
  • EU Country ID Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate – must be no more than 6 months out of date
  • CITB Scheme Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate – must be no more than 6 months out of date. Acceptable CITB Scheme cards include CSCS, CPCS, CISRS
  • Student ID Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate, as well as year of study (e.g. 2018/2019 or expiration date and name of the institution of study) – must be no more than 6 months out of date
  • Citizen Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate and be no more than 6 months out of date
  • Proof of Age Card: Cards issued nationally in the UK by VALIDATE UK, bearing the PASS hologram bearing a photograph of the delegate
  • Young Scots Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate – must be no more than 6 months out of date
  • British Armed Forces Card/Veterans Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate and for an employee or former employee of the Armed Forces only (not a dependent or spouse) – must be no more than 6 months out of date
If a delegate does not hold any of the above ID documents they will need to complete a waiver form.

What does CITB stand for?

How long will my certificate take after completing the course?

Your course assessment results are entered on the CITB system within 5 working days of completing the course. You will then receive an electronic certificate a few days after your results are entered on the system. If you need your certificate to work, we can send you an email to confirm you have passed your course. This should satisfy your employer until you receive your certificate. 

When will my CITB certificate expire?

The CITB Site Safety Plus suite of courses have 5 year expiry dates on their certificates. This includes the following courses delivered by Project Skills Solutions:
