What is the CITB SSSTS Refresher Open Course?

If you have previously completed the SSSTS course, your certificate will expire after 5 years. To renew your qualification, you need to complete a SSSTS refresher course. After completing this course you will have updated your knowledge and skills that are needed to effectively supervise and manage safety on construction sites.

The Open Course is face-to-face in a classroom. Project Skills Solutions has venues across the UK from where you can attend a CITB HSA open course.

CITB SSSTS Refresher Course Details

On receiving payment for your SSSTS Refresher course, an email with your ‘course joining instructions’ is sent to you.

This document includes the following details:

Your chosen course date (this is a 1-day course)
Course start time at your chosen venue
Address of your chosen venue, including a map screenshot
Details of what to do if you need any special requirements to complete the course

You need to bring photographic ID, such as a driving licence or passport with you.

Lunch is not included, so please provide your own.

CITB SSSTS Refresher Open Course Content

Your SSSTS Refresher course will cover the following topics:

Short review of the problems of the industry when it comes to health and safety
Reinforce your understanding of how health and safety law is structured, and how it applies to supervisors
Industry updates on health and safety matters within construction
Review of how to carry out risk assessments and the need for method statements
Recap how to effectively conduct site inductions, toolbox talks and method statement briefings
Reinforce how to monitor site activities effectively
Review the importance of timely intervention when bad practise is identified
Recap understanding of Occupational Health
Fire prevention/control and other emergencies
Reminders of Hazardous substances (COSHH)

Assessment and Certification

At the end of the course, you will be required to complete a test that consists of 25 multiple-choice questions. You will be given 30 minutes to complete the assessment and you will need to get 25 out of 30 marks to pass the test.

You will receive a digital certificate usually within 2 weeks of completing your course.

What happens if I fail the CITB SSSTS Refresher Assessment?

In the event that delegates fail a CITB assessment paper and they qualify to do a re-sit assessment, the assessment paper can ONLY be taken on the same day.

Entry Requirements

You will need to have completed the SSSTS course and your certificate must still be in-date, otherwise, you will need to complete the full 2-day course again. You must also be able to read and write English to complete this course.

What does CITB stand for?

Construction Industry Training Board

What ID can I use for my CITB course?

When you attend a CITB Site Safety Plus course you need provide a form of photographic ID such as:

Passport: A valid passport of any nationality of the delegate – must not be more than 6 months out of date
Photo Card Driving Licence: A valid UK only driving licence with a photograph of the delegate – must not be more than 6 months out of date
Non UK Driving Licence: Showing a photograph of the delegate – must not be more than 6 months out of date
Work ID Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate – must not be more than 6 months out of date (if applicable) and refer to the delegates present employer
EU Country ID Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate – must be no more than 6 months out of date
CITB Scheme Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate – must be no more than 6 months out of date. Acceptable CITB Scheme cards include CSCS, CPCS, CISRS
Student ID Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate, as well as year of study (e.g. 2018/2019 or expiration date and name of the institution of study) – must be no more than 6 months out of date
Citizen Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate and be no more than 6 months out of date
Proof of Age Card: Cards issued nationally in the UK by VALIDATE UK, bearing the PASS hologram bearing a photograph of the delegate
Young Scots Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate – must be no more than 6 months out of date
British Armed Forces Card/Veterans Card: Showing a photograph of the delegate and for an employee or former employee of the Armed Forces only (not a dependent or spouse) – must be no more than 6 months out of date

If a delegate does not hold any of the above ID documents they will need to complete a waiver form.

What is the pass mark for SSSTS?

The SSSTS examination pass mark is 80% (24 out of 30).

What happens if I fail the SSSTS exam and trainer review?

If you have passed the trainer’s review and gained between 70%–77% (21 to 23 out of 30) in the examination or achieved the 80% pass rate but failed the safety-critical questions, you may re-sit a different examination.

When will my CITB certificate expire?

The CITB Site Safety Plus suite of courses have 5 year expiry dates on their certificates. This includes the following courses delivered by Project Skills Solutions:

How long will my certificate take after completing the course?

Your course assessment results are entered on the CITB system within 5 working days of completing the course. You will then receive an electronic certificate a few days after your results are entered on the system. If you need your certificate to work, we can send you an email to confirm you have passed your course. This should satisfy your employer until you receive your certificate.
