What is a Working at Heights Awareness Open Course?
It is important to have the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent falls when working at heights, ensure proper use of equipment, and understand the risks and hazards associated with working at heights – this is what you will learn on a Working at Heights Awareness course. In addition, employers have a duty to provide appropriate training and supervision to employees who work at height to ensure their safety and prevent accidents. The Working at Heights Awareness course is an entry-level awareness course suitable for everyone who works at height, works around or with those working at height, or are supervisors.
Who is the Working at Heights Awareness Training for?
All those required to work at height or supervise working at height as part of their job should attend this training. This includes people who work on ladders, scaffolding, roofs, or any other elevated surface or structure.

Working at Heights Awareness Course Details
On receiving payment for your Working at Heights Awareness course, an email with your ‘course joining instructions’ is sent to you.
This document includes the following details:
- Your chosen course date
- Course start time at your chosen venue
- Address of your chosen venue, including a map screenshot
- Details of what to do if you need any special requirements to complete the course
You need to bring photographic ID, such as a driving licence or passport with you.
Lunch is not included, so please provide your own.

A working at heights awareness course will cover a range of topics related to working safely at height. Some of the topics that may be covered include:
Understanding the risks and hazards associated with working at height
This topic covers the various risks and hazards associated with working at height, such as falls from height, slips, trips, and falls on the same level, falling objects, electrical hazards, and more. Delegates will learn how to identify potential hazards and how to take steps to mitigate or eliminate them.
The importance of risk assessments and safety procedures
Conducting thorough risk assessments before starting work at height, and the use of safety procedures to reduce the risk of accidents. Delegates will learn about hierarchy of controls for managing risks, such as eliminating hazards, using collective protective measures, and providing PPE.
Proper use and inspection of personal protective equipment (PPE)
Fitting, and inspection of PPE such as harnesses, lanyards, and other fall protection equipment. Participants will learn how to identify different types of PPE and their intended use, and how to inspect, maintain and store PPE.
Inspection and maintenance of equipment
Inspection and maintenance of equipment such as ladders, scaffolding, and platforms to ensure they are safe to use. Participants will learn about the importance of inspecting equipment before use, how to identify defects, and how to report them to the appropriate person.
Safe access and egress to and from elevated work areas
This topic covers the different methods of accessing and egressing elevated work areas, such as staircases, fixed ladders, scaffolding, and more. Delegates will learn how to safely access and egress elevated work areas, and how to ensure they are stable and secure before use.
Techniques for working safely on roofs and other elevated surfaces
Specific hazards associated with working on roofs and other elevated surfaces, and techniques for working safely in these environments. Delegates will learn about the importance of fall protection, how to use roof ladders and crawl boards, and how to identify and avoid fragile surfaces.
Emergency procedures and rescue planning
Emergency procedures and rescue planning in the event of an accident or emergency. Participants will learn about the importance of having an emergency plan in place, how to use rescue equipment such as evacuation chairs, and how to safely rescue a colleague in the event of an accident.
Legal requirements and regulations relating to working at height
This topic covers the legal requirements and regulations related to working at height, including the Work at Height Regulations 2005 in the UK. Participants will learn about their responsibilities as employers or employees, and the consequences of failing to comply with legal requirements.
