What is the CITB SMSTS Refresher Course?
If you have previously completed the SMSTS course, your certificate will expire after 5 years. To renew your qualification, you need to complete a SMSTS refresher course. After completing this course you will have updated your knowledge and skills relating to the key responsibilities and accountabilities for members of the construction site Management team.
Your CITB SMSTS course certificate will be renewed and valid for 5 years.

What will I learn on the CITB SMSTS Refresher Course?
As you would have already completed the full SMSTS course, the refresher course focuses more on updating your knowledge and refreshing your understanding of important concepts.
The refresher course will build on previous topics including:
- Update on Legal and Regulator Changes in health and safety legislation related to construction sites
- Review of key health and safety concepts such as risk assessment, hazard identification, control measures, accident investigation and subcontractor management
- Share best practices and lessons learned through looking at real-world examples and case studies
- Reinforcing your health and safety responsibilities and duties of a site manager or supervisor
- Refresh risk assessment and management skills, focusing on identifying and mitigating common hazards and risks and the importance of continuous monitoring

Assessment and Certification
At the end of the course, you will be required to complete a test that consists of 18 multiple-choice questions worth one mark each and 7 short answer questions worth 2 marks each. You will be given 35 minutes to complete the assessment, and during the last 15 minutes you will be able to use your GE700).
You will receive a digital certificate usually within 2 weeks of completing your course.
What happens if I fail the CITB SMSTS Refresher Assessment?
In the event that delegates fail a CITB assessment paper and they qualify to do a re-sit assessment, the assessment paper can ONLY be taken on the same day.
Entry Requirements
You must have an in-date SMSTS certificate (with no more than 6 months before expiry). You will need a good understanding of spoken and written English to complete the course successfully.
