NRSWA courses in Nottingham
The NRSWA Operative course is held at our training venue, in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottingham, just off the M1. Kirkby-in-Ashfield railway station is a 5-minute taxi ride away. The venue is easily accessible from Mansfield and Derby via the A38, from Sheffield and Leicester via the M1, from Worksop via A57 and from Chesterfield via the A61.
For public transportation, the nearest bus stop is a 1-minute walk from the venue. Kirkby-in-Ashfield is well served by bus routes, including the 3A, 3B, and 90.
The training centre is a modern venue with free on-site parking. While lunch is not included, catering is available.
The venue runs full 5-day Operative and Supervisor courses, reassessments and stand-alone units such as location and avoidance and signing, lighting and guarding.

What to expect from your course
Your course will cover a combination of street works units over the 5 days of your course. Once you complete each unit, you will take a multiple-choice test.
The following list is the full range of Operative NRSWA Training units. Since our courses offer various combinations, you must check that the course you want to book includes the units you require:
- Unit LA (Was Unit 1) – Location & avoidance of underground apparatus
- Unit O1 (Was Unit 2) – Signing, lighting and guarding
- Unit O2 (Was Unit 3) – Excavation in the highway
- Unit O3 (Was Unit 4) – Reinstatement & compaction of backfill materials
- Unit O4 (Was Unit 5) – Reinstatement of sub base & road in non-bituminous materials
- Unit O5 (Was Unit 6) – Reinstatement of cold-lay bituminous materials
- Unit O6 (Was Unit 7) – Reinstatement of hot lay bituminous materials (subject to centre)
- Unit O7 (Was Unit 8) – Reinstatement of concrete slabs (subject to centre)
- Unit O8 (Was Unit 9) – Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footway
Equipment to bring on the day
You will be learning on a live site during your course. Therefore, you will be required to wear protective clothing. Requirements vary by location, and some centres can be more accommodating but typically you are required to bring:
- Fluorescent Jacket long-sleeve
- Overalls/Work Clothes (shorts not allowed)
- Gloves
- Safety Boots
- Waterproof Clothing
- Ear Defenders
- Goggles
- Hard Hat
- FFP3 Dust Mask

What is NRSWA?
The NRSWA (New Roads and Street Works Act 1991) exists to ensure safety and correct practice when carrying out any work on roads, highways and footpaths. It is there to minimise risk to both workers and the public. It is an act of legislation (a law or set of laws passed by Parliament). The qualifications required for operatives to undertake streetworks was updated in 2016. In the NRSW Act itself, there are lots of practical guidance given for the efficient co-ordination, ensuring safety and minimising disruption and inconvenience to the general public using the road or pavement.
