NRSWA Courses in Nottingham
The NRSWA Unit O1 course is held in Kirby-in-Ashfield, Nottingham. Located just off the M1, making it easily accessible to towns such as Mansfield and Derby via the A38, Sheffield and Leicester via the M1 Worksop via the A57, and Chesterfield via the A61. Kirkby-in-Ashfield railway station is a 5-minute taxi ride away. A bus stop is located near the venue, and Kirkby-in-Ashfield is well served by routes 3A, 3B, and 90.
The training centre is a modern venue with free on-site parking. While lunch is not included, catering is available.
This course is also available in Bilsthorpe, approximately a 40-minute drive from Nottingham. This training centre is purpose-built with several training rooms and a dedicated breakroom for delegates. There is an onsite cafe providing hot and cold lunches and free parking.
Both these venues run full 5-day Operative and Supervisor courses, reassessments and stand-alone units such as location and avoidance and signing, lighting and guarding.

What to expect from your course
On your Operative Signing, Lighting and Guarding course in Nottingham, you will be taught how to:
- Produce a plan of an intended site showing the position of signs, guarding and traffic signals. The plan must include all relevant distances, sizes, and dimensions required.
- Produce a list of equipment for the intended site.
- Position, test, adjust, commission and decommission temporary traffic signals.
- Conduct the activities safely wearing the appropriate safety wear.
Equipment to bring on the day
You will be learning on a live site during your course. Therefore, you will be required to wear protective clothing. Requirements vary by location, and some centres can be more accommodating but typically you are required to bring:
- Fluorescent Jacket Long-sleeve
- Overalls/Work Clothes (shorts not allowed)
- Gloves
- Safety Boots
- Waterproof Clothing
- Hard Hat

You will be asked to provide photo ID on your course, such as a passport or driving license, please bring this with you.

What is NRSWA?
The NRSWA (New Roads and Street Works Act 1991) exists to ensure safety and correct practice when carrying out any work on roads, highways and footpaths. It is there to minimise risk to both workers and the public. It is an act of legislation (a law or set of laws passed by Parliament). The qualifications required for operatives to undertake streetworks was updated in 2016.
